What is FAQPage schema?

FAQPage schema marks up question and answer pairs on a page. Google restricted the resulting rich result to authoritative government and health sites in 2023, so for most businesses the value is now machine readability for AI answer engines rather than a visual feature.

Also called: FAQ structured data

The requirement that is not optional

The questions and answers must be visible on the page. Marking up content a user cannot see is a policy violation, and it is a common one because the markup is easy to generate from a data file that outgrew the template.

Why it is still worth shipping

  • It is the cleanest extractable format there is — a question and its answer, explicitly paired
  • Answer engines parse structured data in preference to inferring from prose
  • It costs nothing beyond generating it from content you already publish
  • If the rich result ever returns, you are already eligible

Where to use it

On any page with genuine buyer questions — service pages, product pages, a dedicated FAQ page. Not on every page reflexively, and never with questions invented to justify the markup.

A definition can only go so far. Answer Engine Optimization: writing the passage that gets quoted covers this properly — 3 minutes, free, no email required.
