Answer Engine Optimization: writing the passage that gets quoted

AEO is structuring content so a machine can lift a complete, correct answer out of it without needing the rest of the page. The core technique is answer-first: a question-shaped heading, then a 40–60 word self-contained answer, then the depth for readers who want it.

The answer-first pattern

Every extractable passage on the web has the same shape, whether it ends up in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box or an AI answer.

  1. A heading phrased as the question a person would actually ask
  2. Immediately below it, a direct answer in one to three sentences, complete on its own
  3. Then the qualification, evidence and nuance for the reader who stayed

The failure mode is burying the answer under context. "Before we can discuss pricing, it is important to understand that every project is different…" is three sentences that answer nothing, and an extractor takes them at face value: this page does not contain the answer.

Formats that extract cleanly

FormatUse it forWhy it extracts
Definition sentenceWhat is X?One self-contained sentence with the term and its definition
Numbered listHow do I X?Ordered steps map directly to procedure answers
TableX vs Y, or rangesRows and columns survive extraction with their meaning intact
Definition listSeveral short conceptsTerm-and-definition pairs need no surrounding prose
Q&A blockAnything a buyer asksAlready in the exact shape of a question and an answer

Self-containment is the discipline

Extraction removes a passage from its neighbours. Anything that depends on the paragraph above it breaks when lifted, and a broken quote either misrepresents you or is discarded.

  • Avoid "as mentioned above", "this approach", "the former" — name the thing again
  • Repeat the subject rather than using a pronoun at the start of an answer
  • Put the units, currency and time period inside the sentence, not in a caption three paragraphs up
  • Make every answer true in isolation, including the caveats that change its meaning

Specificity beats fluency

Answer engines are built to prefer checkable claims. "Fast turnaround" is unquotable. "Seven days from signed scope for a standard catalogue store, from $150" is a fact with a shape — it can be cited, compared and verified, which is exactly why it gets used.

The same applies to hedging. A page that qualifies every statement into vapour gives an extractor nothing to take. Be specific, and where you genuinely do not know, say what determines the answer instead.

Mark it up, then keep it honest

FAQPage markup makes Q&A pairs machine-readable, and Google requires the questions to be visible on the page. Do not expect a rich result — FAQ rich results have been restricted to authoritative government and health sites since 2023. Ship it because answer engines parse it, not because a star will appear.

HowTo markup is for genuine ordered procedures only. Wrapping it around a list of benefits is a policy violation, and it is the second most common structured-data mistake after inventing review markup.

Questions people ask about this

Is AEO different from GEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO is the writing and structure discipline — making a passage quotable. GEO is the wider system: crawler access, rendering, entity corroboration and measurement. AEO is one component of GEO.
Does answer-first writing hurt readability?
It improves it. Answer-first is how reference documentation and good journalism have always worked, because most readers want the answer and only some want the reasoning.
How long should an answer paragraph be?
Forty to sixty words is the range that reliably fits an extracted snippet while still saying something. Under twenty and it lacks substance; over eighty and it gets truncated mid-thought.
