Process
What is a staging URL and why do I get one?
A private address where the site is built and reviewed before it goes live. You get one so you can open the work at any point rather than waiting for a scheduled presentation — and so feedback arrives while it is still cheap to act on.
What to do with it
- Open it on your phone as well as your computer
- Show it to someone who has never seen the brief and watch where they hesitate
- Check your own details — phone number, address, prices — for accuracy
- Complete the contact form and confirm the notification arrives
- Collect your feedback into one round rather than sending it piecemeal
Why it must not be indexed
A staging site left crawlable competes with the live site in search and can be indexed with unfinished content. It should carry a noindex tag or password protection — and that noindex must be removed at launch, which is one of the most common launch-day mistakes.
What a staging URL tells you about a supplier
That there is no black box. A developer who shows work in progress daily is confident about it; one who insists on a single reveal at the end is managing expectations rather than the project.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, Writing a website brief that gets you comparable quotes covers it in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.

Anas Bin Masud builds e-commerce sites and does technical SEO for businesses in the UK, Canada and Pakistan — fifteen live client sites, six of them stores taking real payments. These answers come from those projects rather than from a content brief. More about how I work, or ask me something directly.
