Process
What happens on website launch day?
DNS points at the new site, the certificate is confirmed on the real domain, redirects go live at the same moment, the staging noindex is removed, and analytics and Search Console are verified. Then someone watches for an hour rather than closing the laptop.
The launch sequence
- Lower the DNS TTL 24 hours beforehand so a problem is reversible in minutes
- Deploy the site and confirm it serves correctly on a temporary address
- Switch DNS, then confirm the certificate works on the real domain
- Deploy redirects at the same moment, never afterwards
- Remove the staging noindex and confirm the live robots meta says index
- Submit the sitemap and verify the property in Search Console
- Test the contact form and, if present, the checkout, end to end
The mistake that costs the most
Leaving a noindex tag in production. It removes the entire site from search silently, produces no visible symptom, and is often discovered weeks later when someone asks why traffic collapsed.
The first week
Watch Search Console coverage, 404 logs and analytics daily. On a migration, keep the old host running for a week and monitor rankings against a baseline recorded before the switch.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, Migrating a site without losing what it took years to earn covers it in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
