Local
How do I rank in Google Maps?
Three levers decide it: a verified business profile with the most specific correct category, name-address-phone details identical everywhere they appear, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Your website matters far less than people expect.
The profile work
- Claim and verify — unverified profiles rank badly and can be edited by strangers
- Choose the most specific primary category that exists, then add secondaries
- Define service areas honestly rather than an aspirational radius
- Complete every field: hours with exceptions, services, attributes, payment methods
- Add real photographs of real work, updated periodically
Reviews
- Ask every satisfied customer immediately after the job
- Never incentivise — it violates policy and the pattern is detectable
- Never write or buy them; it is the fastest route to suspension
- Respond to all of them, briefly, including the bad ones
- A steady trickle beats a burst
What the website contributes
LocalBusiness markup, consistent NAP as real text, content naming the areas you serve, and fast mobile pages. Useful and secondary — profile completeness, proximity and reviews decide most of it.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, Local SEO when customers do not come to your address covers it in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
