Shopify vs WooCommerce
Shopify wins on speed to market and operational simplicity; WooCommerce wins on control and content. Choose Shopify if the catalogue is conventional and you want to trade next week. Choose WooCommerce if content marketing is your acquisition plan and you can commit to maintenance.
Side by side
| Compared on | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first sale | Days | 1–3 weeks |
| Ongoing cost | Subscription plus transaction fees | Hosting only |
| Checkout control | Very limited below Plus | Complete |
| Content publishing | Adequate | Excellent — it is WordPress |
| Maintenance burden | Shopify handles it | Yours, forever |
| Exit cost | High — data exports, theme does not | Low — you own everything |
When Shopify is the right choice
- Your catalogue is conventional and fits standard variants
- Nobody internally wants to manage updates and backups
- You need to be trading within two weeks
- You sell in several currencies and want it handled for you
When WooCommerce is the right choice
- Content marketing is your main acquisition channel
- You need control over URLs, markup or checkout behaviour
- Transaction fees at your volume would exceed the hosting cost
- You already run WordPress and your team knows it
The constraint that decides most cases
Below Shopify Plus you do not control checkout. If your business needs a field, a rule or a step Shopify does not offer, the answer is no, and no budget changes it. That single fact resolves more of these decisions than any feature table.
The cost nobody models properly
Shopify is a subscription plus transaction fees, forever. WooCommerce is hosting plus your time on maintenance, forever. At low volume Shopify is cheaper; at high volume the percentage fees compound, and the crossover point is worth calculating with your actual numbers rather than assuming.
The verdict
For most small retailers with a normal catalogue, Shopify is the honest recommendation and it is the one I give even though I do not build on it. WooCommerce earns its place when content is the acquisition plan or when control genuinely matters.
