Shopify vs a custom build
Shopify wins whenever your catalogue fits a product grid — it will get you trading faster and more reliably than any custom build. A custom build wins when the catalogue does not fit that model, or when checkout carries business logic Shopify will not allow.
Side by side
| Compared on | Shopify | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Days | 1–2 weeks |
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher |
| Monthly cost | Subscription plus fees | Hosting only |
| Catalogue flexibility | Good inside its model, immovable outside it | Whatever you model |
| Checkout logic | Not editable below Plus | Total control |
| Who can fix it | Any Shopify developer | A developer, or your documentation |
When Shopify is the right choice
- Products with standard variants — size, colour, quantity
- You want to add products without a developer
- Speed to market matters more than fit
- You have no appetite for any technical ownership
When a custom build is the right choice
- Configurable products with multiple pricing dimensions
- Made-to-measure pricing that is a formula rather than a variant
- Checkout that must include approval, credit terms or per-customer pricing
- Fulfilment that must happen inside the payment transaction
The test that decides it in one question
Can a customer choose everything they need from a standard variant dropdown? If yes, Shopify. If the answer involves entering measurements, selecting incompatible combinations, or a price that is calculated rather than looked up, a custom build is the honest answer.
The disclosure
I build custom stores. Recommending Shopify to someone with a twenty-product catalogue costs me a project and saves them four times the money for a better operational outcome, which is why the recommendation is worth trusting.
The verdict
Default to Shopify unless something specific rules it out. The custom build is not the better product — it is the necessary one when the catalogue or the checkout will not fit, and that is a smaller set of cases than developers like to admit.
If you want the full treatment
Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom build: choosing without regretting it covers this in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
