Why do website quotes vary so much?
Two reasons stacked together. Location and overhead account for most of the spread, because the same work costs different amounts depending on where the developer lives and how many salaries sit between you and them. The rest is that the quotes are often not for the same site at all.
The part that is genuinely the same work
A developer in Islamabad and a developer in Manchester writing the same PHP produce the same site. What differs is cost of living behind the invoice, and whether an account manager, a designer and a project manager are also being paid from it.
The part where the quotes differ
- One is a bought theme with your logo; one is a modelled catalogue with tested checkout
- One includes handover documentation; one delivers a zip file
- One tests declines and 3D Secure; one tested the happy path
- One puts hosting in your name; one keeps it in theirs
How to make quotes comparable
Send every supplier the same written brief, with must-haves separated from nice-to-haves and a budget range stated. Three quotes for three different interpretations of your project tell you nothing about price.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, How much an e-commerce website actually costs, and what changes the number covers it in about 4 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
