What is included in an SEO retainer?
A monthly technical crawl and fix cycle, Search Console monitoring and issue resolution, content briefs based on your real query data, schema and internal-linking maintenance, and a written report saying what changed, what moved and what is next.
What separates a real retainer from a bad one
- Fixes implemented, not just recommended — implementation is where most audits stall
- Work driven by your own Search Console data rather than a generic checklist
- A written record of what changed, so the value is auditable
- No link buying, ever, at any price point
What a retainer cannot promise
Rankings or traffic figures. Anyone guaranteeing a position is either buying links or counting a keyword nobody searches. What can be promised is that technical barriers get removed and content gets produced against real query data.
When a retainer is the wrong purchase
When the site has one unresolved structural problem. Fixing that once costs less than a month of retainer, and paying monthly for ongoing work on a site that is still blocked is spending in the wrong order.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, Technical SEO, in the order the problems actually block you covers it in about 4 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.

Anas Bin Masud builds e-commerce sites and does technical SEO for businesses in the UK, Canada and Pakistan — fifteen live client sites, six of them stores taking real payments. These answers come from those projects rather than from a content brief. More about how I work, or ask me something directly.
