Process
How long does a website take to build?
A small business website takes about three days of build time once scope is agreed and content exists. An e-commerce store takes about a week, a custom application about ten days. What stretches those timelines is almost never the code — it is decisions and missing content.
Where the time actually goes
| Phase | Business site | Store |
|---|---|---|
| Scope agreed in writing | Day 1 | Day 1 |
| Build on a staging URL | Day 2 | Days 2–3 |
| Payments and integrations | — | Days 4–5 |
| QA on real devices | Day 3 | Day 6 |
| Launch and indexation | Day 3 | Day 7 |
The two things that move the date
- Decision latency — on a three-day build, a decision that waits a day costs a third of the project
- Content readiness. The build finishes and the site has eleven products because nobody was assigned the other three hundred
What a short timeline does not mean
It does not mean a template. It means the sequence is fixed rather than improvised. What should worry you in a quote is not a short timeline — it is a quote given before anyone asked what your catalogue looks like.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, E-commerce website development: what the whole build actually involves covers it in about 7 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
