Performance
Does page speed affect Google rankings?
Yes, but less than commonly claimed. Core Web Vitals are a real ranking input and behave more like a tie-breaker between otherwise comparable pages. The larger, more reliable effect of speed is on conversion — slow pages lose customers regardless of ranking.
What the evidence actually supports
Page experience signals are confirmed inputs, and Google has been consistent that relevance and quality outweigh them. A fast page with a poor answer does not outrank a slower page that answers the query properly.
Where speed does decide outcomes
- Trades and urgent services, where the visitor is comparing three suppliers on a phone
- E-commerce checkout, where each additional second is measurable abandonment
- Mobile traffic on poor connections, which is most local search
The right framing for a budget conversation
Do not sell speed work as an SEO tactic. Sell it as a conversion fix that also happens to be a ranking input, because that is both the honest position and the one with a measurable return.
The longer version
This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, Core Web Vitals, and the order that actually reduces them covers it in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
