What is the difference between a domain and hosting?

The domain is the address; hosting is the building. You rent the address annually from a registrar and rent the space from a host. They are separate services, frequently sold together, and keeping them separate makes changing either one straightforward.

Is shared hosting good enough for a small business?

For a brochure site with modest traffic, usually yes. The limits appear elsewhere: edge rules you cannot change, no control over which crawlers are blocked, slow response times under load, and support that cannot help with anything specific to your configuration.

Do I need email hosting separate from web hosting?

It is usually the better arrangement. Bundled email from a web host tends to have poorer deliverability and ties your mail to a supplier you may want to leave. Separating them means a hosting change never risks your email.

Why bundled email causes trouble

Shared IP reputation with every other site on the server, including spammers
Limited or no support for SPF, DKIM and DMARC configuration
Mail goes down with the website during any hosting incident
Migrating hosts means migrating mailboxes at the same time, which doubles the risk

What separation looks like

Domain at a registrar, website at a host, email at a dedicated provider, with MX records pointing at the mail provider and A records at the web host. Three services, one DNS zone, and each replaceable without touching the others.

The failure to avoid during a move

Changing nameservers before recreating the MX, SPF and DKIM records at the new provider. Mail stops immediately, silently, for everyone. Export the full zone first and recreate every record before switching.
