Security and hosting

Is shared hosting good enough for a small business?

For a brochure site with modest traffic, usually yes. The limits appear elsewhere: edge rules you cannot change, no control over which crawlers are blocked, slow response times under load, and support that cannot help with anything specific to your configuration.

Where shared hosting is genuinely fine

  • A static or lightly dynamic site with predictable traffic
  • A business that does not depend on the site being fast for conversion
  • A budget where the alternative is no professional hosting at all

Where it stops being fine

When the provider applies edge rules you cannot override. This site’s current host returns 403 to nine AI crawlers before robots.txt is even read — a rule matched on user-agent at the provider’s proxy, unfixable from the account and unaffected by moving to a custom domain. No configuration solves it; only a host change does.

What to check before committing

  1. Fetch your own site with several crawler user-agents and confirm every one returns 200
  2. Check whether you can set response headers at all
  3. Check the actual time to first byte from your customers’ region
  4. Confirm you can take and restore a full backup yourself

The longer version

This answer is deliberately short. If you want the full treatment, How to check whether AI crawlers can actually reach your site covers it in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
