Web developer in Hackney

Websites, online stores and technical SEO for Hackney businesses — built remotely from Islamabad, quoted in GBP, scoped in writing before anything starts.

Most Hackney businesses I speak to do not need a bigger website. They need the one they have to load faster, say what they actually sell in the first screen, and make an enquiry possible without three clicks. That is usually a rebuild of two or three pages, not a rebuild of everything, and it is worth saying before you are quoted for a full site you may not need.

What working with a British client actually changes

These are the terms that differ by country rather than by town. They apply to every business in United Kingdom, Hackney included, and they are the substance of what this page is claiming.

Quoted and invoiced in GBP — never a converted figure presented at the end
Tax position VAT at 20% once you are registered — my invoices are outside the scope of UK VAT and you account for them under the reverse charge
Your customers' data sits under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018
Lawful transfer mechanism a pre-signed DPA with a completed UK International Data Transfer Addendum
Checkout can realistically use Stripe, GoCardless for Direct Debit, and Klarna or Clearpay where basket sizes justify it

One thing worth knowing about building for United Kingdom

UK local search is the most saturated in the English-speaking world, so a merely competent site does not win the job — the quote form does. Every UK build I ship is specified around the enquiry step first and the homepage second.

Accessibility on a Hackney build, and why it is not optional

Keyboard navigation, real contrast ratios, form labels that are actually associated with their inputs, and alt text that describes rather than repeats. None of it is expensive when built in from the start and all of it is expensive to retrofit, which is the entire argument for doing it in the first pass.

The commercial case is simpler than the legal one: a site that a screen reader can navigate is a site that a search engine can parse, because both are reading the same semantic structure. Accessibility work and technical SEO overlap far more than either discipline usually admits, and in Hackney the same build serves both.

Hospitality and venues in Hackney

Restaurants, cafés, hotels and venues are judged on four things a visitor looks for immediately: today's opening hours, the menu or rate as a readable page, real photographs of the actual room, and how to book. Everything else on a hospitality site is decoration arranged around those four.

The PDF menu deserves its own warning. It is invisible to search engines, unreadable on a phone without pinch-zoom, and it is the most common reason a Hackney venue never appears for searches naming the dishes it serves. Menus belong in HTML.

A redesign that quietly deleted the rankings

The classic disaster: a new site launches, looks far better, and organic enquiries fall off a cliff within a fortnight. The cause is almost always identical — the URLs changed and nothing was redirected, so every page that had accumulated years of authority now returns a 404.

Preventing it is a redirect map built before launch: every old URL to its closest new equivalent with a 301, and anything without an equivalent pointed at the nearest relevant page rather than the homepage. If your Hackney site is being redesigned by anyone, ask to see that map. If it does not exist, that is the entire risk in one document.

Hiring a developer who is not in Hackney

A British business hiring outside the UK is usually doing it for price, and price is the least interesting reason. The more durable one is availability: a one-person supplier answers you directly rather than through an account manager who has to check. That is an advantage on a small project and a genuine liability on a large one, which is why I turn down projects that need a team.

What I build for Hackney businesses

Fixed-scope, fixed-price, quoted in GBP. The full list is on the services page.

E-commerce website development I build online stores end to end — catalogue, cart, Stripe checkout, order emails and the technical SEO that gets them found. Six of the fifteen sites I have shipped are e-commerce builds, and every one of them takes real payments. From $150 · 7 days Technical SEO audits and implementation Most SEO audits hand you a 60-page document and an invoice. I am a developer first, so I find the problems and then fix them in the codebase — crawlability, indexation, schema, Core Web Vitals, and whether AI answer engines can read your site at all. From $80 · 3 days Business website development Most small business websites fail at one job: turning a stranger who searched for your service into a phone call. I build the version that does — three days, mobile-first, live on your own hosting, with the enquiry form tested before anybody sees it. From $80 · 3 days Custom website development A template is the right answer more often than developers like to admit. This page is about the times it is not — when the thing your business does has a shape no theme author anticipated, and forcing it into one costs more in permanent workarounds than building it properly would have cost once. From $200 · 10 days Web application development A website presents information. An application does work — it holds state, enforces rules, and produces something at the end. Most businesses that need the second one are running it on a spreadsheet nobody is allowed to sort, and paying for that in errors rather than in software. From $200 · 10 days

What I am not claiming about Hackney

A location page is the easiest place on a website to imply something untrue, so here is the other side of it plainly:

Hackney web development — common questions

Do you actually work with businesses in Hackney?
Yes, remotely. I work with British clients from Islamabad, quoting in GBP and invoicing in GBP. I have no office, address or phone number in Hackney and will not pretend otherwise. If your project needs someone physically present, hire locally — I will say so in the first reply rather than after a deposit.
How much does a website cost in Hackney?
A business website starts from £65 and goes live in about three days. An e-commerce build starts from £120 in around seven days, and a custom application from £160 in ten. Those are starting figures — the exact number is fixed in writing once scope is agreed, and it does not move after that.
What currency will I be invoiced in?
GBP. Quotes, milestones and the final invoice are all written in GBP so you are never comparing a converted figure against a local supplier's. Regarding tax: VAT at 20% once you are registered — my invoices are outside the scope of UK VAT and you account for them under the reverse charge.
Who owns the website when it is finished?
You do, completely. The domain is registered in your name, hosting sits in your account, the code lives in a repository you control, and any payment provider account is opened in your business name. Credentials are handed to you as they are created rather than at the end, so you are never locked out of your own site.
What happens if I am not happy with the result?
Work is delivered in milestones against a written scope, and you review each one on a staging URL before it is paid for. If the delivered milestone does not match the scope, it gets corrected before anything moves forward. That structure exists so disagreement is resolved at the stage it happens rather than at the end when it is expensive.
Do you build on WordPress or something custom?
Whichever the project justifies. WordPress when you need to edit content constantly and want a familiar admin. A static build when speed and security matter more than a plugin ecosystem. Custom PHP and MySQL when the logic is genuinely yours. The choice is explained in the quote with its trade-offs, not presented as a foregone conclusion.
Can you migrate my Hackney site without losing rankings?
Yes, and the redirect map is the whole job. Every existing URL is mapped to its new equivalent with a 301 before launch, and anything with no equivalent goes to the closest relevant page rather than the homepage. Sites lose rankings in migration because that mapping was skipped, not because migration is inherently risky.

Before you enquire: pricing is published rather than quoted on request, how I work covers the process end to end, the work page lists live client sites you can open, and vendor information answers the procurement questions.
