How to track conversions without cookies

Use a server-side confirmation page as the conversion event and a cookieless analytics tool to count it. You get accurate totals by source without identifying individuals — which is what most businesses actually act on.

Before you start

  • A cookieless analytics account
  • Access to the form handler or checkout

The steps

  1. Step 1: Define what a conversion is

A submitted enquiry, a completed order, a booking. One or two events, not fifteen.

  2. Step 2: Redirect to a dedicated confirmation page

A URL only reachable after the action, such as /thank-you/.

  3. Step 3: Mark that page noindex

It should never appear in search results as a landing page.

  4. Step 4: Register it as a goal

In your analytics tool, count views of that URL as the conversion.

  5. Step 5: Check the referrer breakdown

Which sources produce conversions, not just visits. That is the number worth reporting.

  6. Step 6: Verify with a real submission

Complete the form yourself and confirm the event registers.

What you keep and what you lose

You keep conversion counts by source, by landing page and over time — everything needed to decide where to invest. You lose individual journeys across sessions and devices, and remarketing audiences. If you do not buy remarketing, you lose nothing you were using.

Server-side counting is more accurate anyway

A confirmation page reached after a server-side action cannot be inflated by bots filling forms or blocked by an ad blocker, both of which distort client-side event tracking. The simpler method is frequently the more truthful one.

What to do with the numbers

Compare conversion rate by source rather than raw volume. A channel sending a tenth of the traffic and twice the enquiries is where the next hour of work belongs, and that comparison needs nothing more than a confirmation page and a referrer breakdown. Reporting visits without conversions is the most common way analytics gets installed and never used.

The background behind this

Core Web Vitals, and the order that actually reduces them covers the reasoning in about 3 minutes — free, ungated, written from client work.
