Search and SEO
What is Long-tail keyword?
A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific query with lower search volume and usually higher intent — "man and van hire east london saturday" rather than "removals". Individually they are small; collectively they are the majority of all searches.
Also called: long tail search term
Why they matter more for small sites
Head terms are won by authority, which takes years to build. Long-tail terms are won by being the most specific and complete answer, which is available to anyone willing to write it. That is the only realistic entry point for a site with no backlink profile.
How to find them
- Search Console query data, once you have any impressions at all — the single best source and it is free
- Autocomplete and People Also Ask, which are literal records of what people type
- The questions clients ask you on calls, which almost nobody mines
- Support tickets and enquiry emails, which are long-tail queries in disguise
The compounding effect
One page answering one specific question is unremarkable. Thirty of them, internally linked and covering a subject properly, build topical depth that lifts the whole cluster — including the commercial pages the cluster points at.
