Search and SEO
What is Helpful content?
Helpful content is Google’s term for content created primarily for people rather than to rank. What began as a separate system in 2022 was folded into the core ranking systems in 2024, which means it is now assessed continuously rather than in discrete updates.

The self-assessment questions that matter
- Would someone reading this feel they learned enough to achieve their goal?
- Does it demonstrate first-hand experience, or does it summarise what others wrote?
- Does it leave the reader feeling they need to search again?
- Was it produced primarily because a keyword tool suggested it?
- Does it answer the question directly, or circle it to reach a word count?
What site-wide assessment means
The system evaluates a site as a whole, not only the page in question. A large volume of unhelpful pages can suppress the pages that are good, which is the strongest argument against publishing filler alongside your genuine work.
The practical implication
Removing or improving weak pages is a legitimate optimisation, and often a faster win than adding more. Publishing less, better, is a strategy — and it is the opposite of what most content briefs recommend.
