Search and SEO
What is Faceted navigation?
Faceted navigation is filtering a category by attributes — size, colour, price, brand. It is essential for shoppers and it is the largest single source of index bloat in e-commerce, because four filters with five options each generate several hundred URL combinations.

The arithmetic
Filters multiply rather than add. A category with filters for size, colour, brand and price, each with five values, produces over six hundred combinations before pagination and sort order are considered. Almost none of them are things anyone searched for.
How to handle it
- Canonicalise filtered views to the clean category URL by default
- Give a facet a real, static, indexable URL only where it has genuine search demand — "waterproof walking boots" might; "boots sorted by price descending" does not
- Never make sort order an indexable variant
- Do not link to combinations you do not want crawled
- Use robots.txt disallow deliberately rather than as a first response, because it strands already-indexed URLs
The commercial upside people miss
A handful of facet combinations usually have real demand and no dedicated competitor page. Promoting those few to proper landing pages with their own copy is one of the highest-return moves available in e-commerce SEO.
