GEO vs SEO
GEO adds a new consumer rather than replacing the old one. It has one prerequisite classic SEO does not: AI crawlers must actually be able to fetch you, and many hosts block them at the edge without the site owner ever knowing.
Side by side
| Compared on | GEO | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer | AI answer engines | Search engines |
| Access requirement | AI crawler user-agents must get 200 | Googlebot must get 200 |
| Rendering tolerance | None — no JavaScript execution | Deferred rendering available |
| Wins by | Being cited | Being ranked |
| Measurable in | Logs, referrers, prompt tests | Search Console |
When GEO is the right choice
- When your buyers research by asking an assistant
- For content that answers questions rather than sells directly
- When brand corroboration across profiles is weak and needs building
When SEO is the right choice
- When commercial head terms drive the business
- When the click is the conversion
- When you need measurable data to justify the work
The prerequisite people skip
Test whether AI crawlers can reach you before doing anything else. Shared hosts commonly return 403 to GPTBot and ClaudeBot at their edge proxy, so a perfect robots.txt is never delivered to the crawlers it addresses.
Corroboration is the part with no shortcut
Answer engines avoid confidently citing an entity they cannot verify. Two profiles is not corroboration; ten to fourteen consistent ones is. That is slow, free, and the highest-leverage GEO work available to a small business.
The thirty-second test worth running first
Fetch your home page with the GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot user-agents and read the status codes. Every line should be 200. Anything else means GEO work is wasted effort until the host changes, and no amount of content or markup compensates.
The verdict
Do both, because the foundations are the same. The GEO-specific work is access testing and entity corroboration — everything else you were going to do anyway.
